South Carolina Women's Basketball Sec Tournament

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The University of South Carolina women’s basketball team claimed the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Tournament title on Sunday, March 9, 2025, defeating No. 1 Texas with a decisive 85-77 victory at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

The Gamecocks (31-2) faced the Longhorns (29-3) for the championship after a competitive season, where both teams shared the SEC regular-season title. The matchup marked the third encounter between them this season, with each team previously winning one game.

Leading the charge for South Carolina, Chloe Kitts scored a career-high 25 points, along with securing vital rebounds that helped shift momentum throughout the game.

“We knew that this game was crucial not only for pride but also for our standing in the NCAA Tournament,” Kitts said post-game. “We came out strong and played our hearts out.”

The Gamecocks took control early, establishing a 33-16 lead by halftime thanks in part to superior defense, which forced Texas into nine turnovers and yielded only six points in the second quarter. South Carolina’s relentless pursuit on the court allowed the team to dominate fast-break points, outscoring Texas 9-0 on quick transitions.

“Our defense was the key today. We executed our game plan and held Texas to some tough shots,” South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley remarked. “Every player contributed to this victory, and I couldn’t be prouder of the team.”

Texas struggled to find a rhythm in the first half, shooting just 25% from the field, while South Carolina’s offense showcased efficiency, ending the half at a 50% shooting rate.

In the second half, Texas attempted to close the gap with improved shooting and quicker play, reaching as close as five points near the end of the fourth quarter. However, the Gamecocks executed clutch plays to secure their lead, ensuring their victory.

“We fought hard and gave it our all, but South Carolina was the better team today,” said Texas head coach Vic Schaefer. “We’ve got to learn from this experience as we prepare for the NCAA Tournament.”

As the SEC champions, South Carolina solidified their position ahead of the NCAA Women’s Tournament, entering with significant momentum. The Gamecocks were aiming for a run toward winning consecutive national titles, having previously claimed the championship.

“This is just the beginning. Our eyes are on the ultimate prize,” Kitts emphasized, looking forward to the upcoming tournament.
