COLUMBIA — The South Carolina Gamecocks are gearing up for an important Week 8 game against the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners, set for Oct. 18 at 12:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network. With a record of 3-3 and 1-3 in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the Gamecocks are eager to turn their season around.

Coach Shane Beamer‘s squad will likely only have favorable odds in their upcoming game against Coastal Carolina on Nov. 22 unless they can secure a victory this Saturday. Oklahoma, boasting a record of 5-1 and 1-1 in the conference, is coming off a 23-6 loss to Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

Oklahoma’s defense has been a significant force this season, allowing just 211.2 total yards per game, making it the top unit in the nation. With the pressure mounting, South Carolina needs to capitalize on its home field advantage to overcome the Sooners. Last season, South Carolina’s defense performed exceptionally well against Oklahoma, forcing four turnovers and achieving nine sacks.

South Carolina’s quarterback, Tanner Sellers, holds a slight edge in health compared to Oklahoma’s John Mateer, who is recovering from hand surgery. Sellers has thrown two interceptions this season, whereas Mateer has six. Despite concerns about underperformance on offense, Sellers is still competitive, with only two fewer passing touchdowns than Mateer. The Gamecocks’ defense has forced eight turnovers, showcasing their potential against a high-caliber team.

Oklahoma presents its own challenges, ranking second in scoring defense with an average of 9.83 points allowed per game. Their pass defense is also formidable, giving up only 126.3 yards through the air and recording 22 sacks this season. South Carolina’s offensive line has allowed 20 sacks, which could be problematic against an aggressive Sooners defense.

If the game comes down to a field goal, Oklahoma’s kicker, Tate Sandell, has shown reliability, making 4-of-5 attempts from 40-49 yards and both attempts from beyond 50 yards. In contrast, South Carolina’s William Joyce is 2-of-4 from 40-49 yards and has not yet attempted a field goal from 50 yards.

With high stakes this week, South Carolina is looking to rally together to secure a much-needed victory. In a closely contested matchup, predictions have South Carolina edging out Oklahoma with a final score of 20-17.
