Stanford Men’s Basketball Opens Season with Victory Over Portland State
STANFORD, Calif. – In an exciting season opener, Stanford men’s basketball defeated Portland State 89-79 on November 4, 2025, marking the school’s 15th consecutive victory in first games of the season.
Freshman Ebuka Okorie led the Cardinal with a remarkable 26 points, becoming the highest-scoring true freshman in his Cardinal debut since at least 1996. Okorie’s performance surpassed the previous record held by another Stanford player during the 2020 Maui Invitational.
Okorie also contributed seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals during the game. Senior Chisom Okpara added 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting, making it his best-scoring performance in a Stanford uniform. Other notable contributions came from Benny Gealer with 12 points and three 3-pointers, and AJ Rohosy added 14 points.
Stanford’s defense was key, forcing Portland State into 21 turnovers, which resulted in 25 points for the Cardinal. The Vikings initially took an early lead, but Stanford quickly responded with a 9-0 run, taking control of the game.
Portland State, led by Sebastian Tidor‘s 22 points, made attempts to close the gap, and their 3-point shooting was particularly effective. However, Stanford managed to maintain their lead thanks to strong performances at the free-throw line, shooting 29-of-36.
The Cardinal will continue their homestand with a game against Montana on Saturday, November 8, at 1 p.m., which will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
