Steelers Eye Quarterbacks During NFL Combine Ahead of Draft

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — As the NFL Draft approaches, the Pittsburgh Steelers are narrowing their focus on three quarterbacks: Jaxson Dart, Quinn Ewers, and Max Brosmer. With the team looking to secure a starter, presumably either Justin Fields or Russell Wilson, the Steelers hope to draft a backup who can develop over the next few years.
The Steelers face challenges if they wish to acquire higher-ranked prospects, such as Colorado‘s Shedeur Sanders or Miami‘s Tyler Van Dyke, as doing so would require significant trades. Nevertheless, Dart, Ewers, and Brosmer have drawn attention following their interviews at the NFL Combine this week, offering the team a glimpse into their potential.
Dart, who led the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in passing yards with 4,279 and completion percentage at 69.3 during the previous season, expressed admiration for head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. “The Steelers have been great. Coach Smith and Coach Tomlin are elite at what they do,” Dart stated. “They’ve had a ton of success everywhere they’ve been. I had a lot of fun making relationships with them.”
Despite his impressive statistics, there are concerns regarding Dart’s ability to process NFL-level defenses, given that he played in a tailored system at Ole Miss. He is projected to be the third quarterback selected in the late April draft.
Ewers also spoke positively about his interactions with the Steelers’ coaching staff. “It was great getting to talk to Coach Tomlin and just getting to know him,” Ewers remarked. The 22-year-old quarterback demonstrated his skills with 3,472 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while leading the Texas Longhorns to the College Football Playoff semifinals. However, Ewers’ selection is uncertain as scouts evaluate his arm talent and injury history, likely placing him as a late Day 2 or early Day 3 pick.
Brosmer, who transferred to Minnesota after an impressive stint at New Hampshire, amassed 8,467 career yards from 2019 to 2023. In the recent season, he passed for 2,828 yards, 18 touchdowns, and six interceptions, adding to his profile as a potential late Day 3 draft choice, thanks to his experience and traditional pocket-passing game.
All three quarterbacks are expected to showcase their skills at the Combine, and Pittsburgh will closely monitor their performance. A strong showing could influence the Steelers’ decision-making process, potentially leading them to select one of these promising prospects in the upcoming NFL Draft.
