Steelers Face Offensive Line and Injury Challenges Ahead of Jets Clash
The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for a crucial Sunday night matchup against the New York Jets with significant injuries affecting their lineup. Notably, the offensive line and linebacker positions remain a primary concern as the team prepares without rookie starting center Zach Frazier. Frazier sustained an ankle injury during the game against the Raiders, sidelining him for the upcoming contest.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media, confirming the week-to-week status of Frazier’s injury and stating that the center, along with linebacker Nick Herbig, would not participate in the upcoming game. Herbig is recovering from a hamstring injury.
Stepping up in Frazier’s absence is second-year center Ryan McCollum, who will make his second career NFL start and first with the Steelers. McCollum previously played 13 games for the Detroit Lions in 2021. Tomlin expressed confidence in McCollum, describing him as a “high intensity guy who’s a heck of a communicator.”
Tomlin further emphasized the team’s ethos of turning injuries into opportunities, stating, “One man’s misfortune is another man’s opportunity.” He noted the ongoing rotation within the offensive line due to injuries, which has continually affected team composition throughout the 2024 season.
The Steelers have also been dealing with injuries to players including James Daniels, Troy Fautanu, and Nate Herbig, all on the Injured/Reserve List. Despite the setbacks, Tomlin highlighted the team’s depth in the offensive line as a critical factor in maintaining their competitive edge.
In addition to Frazier and Herbig, running back Najee Harris did not practice due to a rib injury. Tomlin remains optimistic about the potential return of other key players, including tight end MyCole Pruitt, who was a full participant in practice, and linebacker Alex Highsmith, who participated on a limited basis.
Elsewhere, quarterback Russell Wilson is reportedly healthy according to Tomlin, making him “in consideration” for Sunday night. Wilson’s increased participation in practice marks a potential return after recovering from a calf injury.
Regarding the lineup decisions for the game, Tomlin indicated that the choice of starting quarterback would be determined “in-house.” Nevertheless, many interpret Wilson’s return to practice as an indication of his likely participation against the Jets.
The Steelers’ most recent injury report lists several players, including Najee Harris, Damontae Kazee, and Alex Highsmith, among others, either not practicing or limited in their participation.
The New York Jets’ injury report shows notable absences as well, mentioning players such as cornerback Michael Carter II and quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Jets’ practice participation was only an estimation due to a walkthrough session.
