Strong 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Lima and Callao

Lima, Peru — A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale shook Lima and Callao this morning, sending residents into a panic. The quake struck at 11:35 a.m. local time and was centered 30 kilometers southwest of Callao at a depth of 49 kilometers, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP).
The IGP reported that the shaking was felt moderately across the region, with intensity level IV recorded in Callao. Eyewitness accounts indicate that many residents were startled, especially since the quake occurred during a festive day for families celebrating Father’s Day.
Local authorities, including the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci), remain on alert for potential aftershocks and any damage caused by the tremors. So far, no injuries or major damage reports have been confirmed.
The Peruvian Navy’s Hydrography and Navigation Directorate has stated that the earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat to the coastal areas. However, precautionary measures are in place while they monitor the ongoing situation.
Reports on social media from neighborhoods such as Miraflores and Chorrillos noted landslides along the cliffs of the Costa Verde. Residents have been advised to stay calm and move away from any objects that could fall during aftershocks.
Indeci recommends that families review their emergency plans and prepare for possible evacuations if necessary. The agency continues to emphasize the importance of having emergency kits ready in case of further seismic activity.
