Austin Eguavoen, the interim coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has addressed increasing speculation regarding Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo‘s international future. Adarabioyo, who is of Nigerian descent but born in England, is eligible to play for either England or Nigeria.

The defender, aged 27, has a background with Manchester City and recently joined Chelsea following an impressive stint at Fulham. Despite representing England at various youth levels, Adarabioyo has not yet been selected for the senior team, led by manager Gareth Southgate, including the latest European Championship.

Eguavoen, during a recent media interaction, confirmed that the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is closely observing Adarabioyo’s situation. While Eguavoen has not had direct communication with the player, he praised Adarabioyo’s abilities and reiterated that every Nigerian player globally has the option to represent the country at the international level.

“I didn’t speak with Tosin, but he’s a good player,” Eguavoen told reporters. “He’s one of the players we’re monitoring. Every Nigerian playing worldwide has the right to play for Nigeria, including Tosin.”

Should Adarabioyo choose to don the Nigerian jersey, he could potentially form a strong defensive partnership with Super Eagles’ existing defender William Troost-Ekong. This addition could significantly enhance Nigeria’s defensive lineup as they gear up for the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The team faces a critical double-header against Libya in two weeks. Eguavoen is concentrating on preparing the team for these challenges amid ongoing reports of Adarabioyo’s possible allegiance switch.
