Suspense Builds as Jon Rahm Seeks Redemption at 89th Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Jon Rahm is determined to reclaim his status as one of golf’s best during the 89th Masters, which begins this week at Augusta National Golf Club.
Despite transitioning to LIV Golf, which does not award world ranking points, Rahm has consistently finished in the top 10 across different tournaments. However, his major performances last season—in which he tied for 45th at the Masters and withdrew from the U.S. Open—have raised questions about his ranking. Now, he enters the tournament ranked 80, though he retains confidence in his abilities.
“A couple weeks to go, and I’ll be gone,” Rahm said. “I’m not going to say exactly a number, but I would still undoubtedly consider myself a top-10 player in the world.” His claim of being undervalued is supported by Data Golf, which places him fourth in overall rankings.
Colt Knost of CBS Sports recently played with Rahm, affirming that his game shows signs of improvement. “It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he was wearing a Green Jacket again on Sunday,” Knost said.
Rahm’s performance in the latter half of last season was impressive, including a runner-up finish at the Spanish Open and a tie for seventh at the British Open. Feeling accomplished yet humble, Rahm reflects on his current mindset as a father of three. This experience has contributed to a sense of calm heading into the Masters, a stark contrast to last year’s pressure.
<p“This year I feel more at ease, I didn't have the time to come early for practice,” Rahm explained. “But if I win this year, then I definitely won't come again early.”
The Masters has always been a favorable course for the Spaniard, who has recorded five top-10 finishes, including his victory in 2023. As he prepares for his ninth appearance, the stakes are high for Rahm, especially given the competition from fellow golfers like defending champion Scottie Scheffler.
The anticipation is palpable not just for Rahm but for all participants, with Scheffler aiming for a third championship in four years. Other notable competitors include Rory McIlroy, who seeks to secure his career grand slam.
As the tournament unfolds, the world will watch closely, eager to see if Rahm can surmount challenges and seize his moment in this prestigious event. His potential for victory highlights the enduring appeal and drama of the Masters—all while battling a crowded field of accomplished professionals.
