The Sydney Swans are undergoing significant challenges as they prepare for the AFL Preliminary Final against Port Adelaide. The Swans recently suffered a devastating 112-point defeat at the hands of Port Adelaide in August at the Adelaide Oval. This loss has forced the team to reconsider their strategies amid concerns about their hopes for the premiership.

Coach John Longmire has described that performance as “completely and utterly unacceptable.” Despite being minor premiers, the Swans have struggled to maintain the impressive form they showcased earlier in the season, losing five out of their last six games.

One of the most glaring issues facing the Swans this season is their slow starts in matches. They hold the worst record for opening terms among the eight teams that qualified for the finals, with a quarter-time percentage significantly lower than their competitors. This pattern has highlighted a weakness in their game strategy throughout 2024.

Longmire has recognized that fatigue may have played a part in their previous performances. After allowing players time to recuperate following their loss to Port, the team showed improved form, including a win against Collingwood.

Swan’s player Isaac Heeney expressed confidence in the team’s current form, contrasting it with their earlier rut. Heeney emphasized the necessity of a strong start against Port, particularly given their recent track record against the team from Adelaide.

Despite losing their last eight matches against Port Adelaide, Sydney is approaching the preliminary final with renewed focus. Port Adelaide’s coach, Ken Hinkley, has pointed out that past matches are inconsequential to Friday night’s game.

Port Adelaide is expected to capitalize on Sydney’s slow start. However, their coach noted the Swans’ strong midfield as a challenge they must address to succeed in the finals. The Swans have managed to overcome leads against them in recent matches, demonstrating resilience that could prove crucial.

Fox Footy analyst Leigh Montagna suggested that Port Adelaide has a strong chance of continuing their streak against the Swans. He highlighted that Port’s defense could be pivotal in securing a win, advocating for a low-scoring, defensive game as a strategy to counter Sydney’s strengths.
