Syracuse Orange Dominates Delaware State in Season Opener
Syracuse, N.Y. — The Syracuse Orange took on the Delaware State Hornets in a season opener at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday at 1 p.m. Syracuse dominated the game, ending with a score of 85-47.
Freshman Kiyan Anthony stepped up in the absence of JJ Starling, who was sidelined with a lower-body injury. Anthony scored 15 points and played a crucial role in leading the team to victory. After the game, Syracuse head coach Adrian Autry praised the team’s defensive effort, which forced 22 turnovers from the Hornets.
Delaware State struggled throughout the game, shooting just 20% from the field and failing to find their rhythm. Zion Bethea, the Hornets’ leading scorer, managed to contribute but faced tough defense from Syracuse.
Syracuse got off to a strong start, leading 10-2 with 15:44 left in the first half. Donnie Freeman showcased his impressive range by hitting a 3-pointer and scoring six points early in the game. The Orange continued to build their lead through solid defense and quick transition offense, often resulting in easy baskets.
During the first half, Anthony made a notable impact, scoring a 3-pointer from the wing and securing a foul, although he missed the subsequent free throw. Sadiq White also had a brief scare with an ankle injury but returned to contribute later in the game.
The game continued to tilt in Syracuse’s favor as they went into halftime with a significant lead, thanks to their effective transition play and aggressive defense. As the second half unfolded, Syracuse maintained their dominance, allowing their bench players to contribute as well.
With the victory, Syracuse improves to 1-0 for the season, while Delaware State falls to 0-1. The Orange will have a week off before facing Drexel in their next matchup.
