Taylor Tomlinson Comedy Performance Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Comedian Taylor Tomlinson captivated the audience during her show Thursday night at the Orpheum Theatre, engaging in an unprecedented level of interaction with fans. “I’ve never talked to the crowd this long,” Tomlinson said, as she humorously coaxed ghost stories from audience members. “I feel like I work at Cold Stone and I’m giving you an extra scoop of ice cream.”

The 31-year-old comic, known for her warmth and genuine curiosity, is performing three remaining shows this weekend in downtown Minneapolis, following a successful comedy tour in 2023. Her charm has also secured her a hosting role on CBS’ “After Midnight,” which recently received a renewal for a second season.

Despite growing up in California, Tomlinson reflected on being frequently mistaken for a Midwesterner. “That’s kindness,” she remarked, acknowledging her fondness for the Twin Cities where she has spent time visiting friends, including fellow comic Kelsey Cook.

At Thursday’s show, Tomlinson brought along Sophie Buddle, a talented writer and performer from the Mall of America’s House of Comedy. Buddle, who contributes to Tomlinson’s monologues for “After Midnight,” shared her witty, almost ditzy comedic style, which effectively juxtaposes Tomlinson’s sharper humor.

As they finished their set, the duo entertained fans by responding to text messages sent in by audience members, adding a personalized element to the performance. The comics were particularly amused to discover that a person moderating a Reddit discussion about “After Midnight” was present in the balcony, sharing insights as they engaged with their fans.

Those in attendance were treated to a performance lasting over two hours. Tomlinson’s act stayed true to her previous Netflix specials, often reflecting on her strict religious upbringing and observations of Christian hypocrisy. Although some familiar material was presented, she offered unique perspectives, such as likening the biblical tale of Job to “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.”

In a candid moment during the performance, Tomlinson discussed her recent announcement about her queerness, sharing anecdotes from her experiences dating women for the first time. Displaying her knack for blending serious topics with humor, she referenced pop culture icons such as “Bridgerton,” “Gilmore Girls,” and Jack Sparrow, lightening the atmosphere.

Concluding her set, Tomlinson expressed concern that some of her new material might be too risqué for her upcoming Netflix special, implying the possibility of backlash. “If that happens, I’ll just go back to performing in churches, where I’ll denounce my devilish period,” she joked.

Taylor Tomlinson’s infectious energy ensures that her remaining shows in Minneapolis will continue to foster intimate and engaging interactions with her fans, maintaining her reputation as an extremely relatable and accessible performer.
