Tennessee Titans Punter Ryan Stonehouse Highlights

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Titans have decided against tendering a contract to restricted free agent punter Ryan Stonehouse, making him an unrestricted free agent as of Wednesday. The unexpected move comes during the second day of the NFL’s legal tampering period before free agency officially begins.

Multiple reports confirmed that the Titans will not offer Stonehouse a tender, a decision that surprised both fans and sports analysts alike. Stonehouse’s agent, John Perla, expressed gratitude to the organization, stating, “Thanks to the Titans for the opportunity. We understand teams make difficult decisions, and they’re going to move on.”

Stonehouse, who had a notable rookie season in 2022 where he averaged a record-breaking 53.1 yards per punt, faced challenges in 2024, but still maintained commendable averages, including over 50 yards per punt and ranking among the top punters in the league.

Despite his impressive output, including leading the NFL in punting yards during his tenure, the Titans’ confidence seems to have waned due to a drop in production following his recovery from an ACL injury. His net punting average fell significantly last season, dropping from second in the league in 2023 to 29th in 2024.

Moreover, had the Titans chosen to tender Stonehouse, they would have been responsible for a one-year contract worth approximately $2.985 million, positioning him as the third-highest paid punter in the league. The franchise opted instead to let him test the free-agent waters, hoping to improve their roster in other areas.

This decision leaves a gap in the Titans’ special teams unit, which struggled historically throughout the previous season. The TITANS’ coaching staff will now face the challenge of filling this key role as they aim to rebuild the team and enhance their overall performance.

In the NFL, punters aren’t generally viewed as marquee players, but Stonehouse’s ability to change field position consistently has proven vital for the Titans. His absence could prompt shifts in strategy for both the Titans and opposing teams moving forward.

As the free agency period unfolds, many teams, including the Denver Broncos, who need a punter following Riley Dixon‘s departure to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, may show interest in acquiring Stonehouse. His track record and leg strength make him an intriguing option for teams looking to bolster their special teams.
