Texans Sign Veteran Cornerback Ronald Darby to One-Year Deal

HOUSTON, March 17, 2025 — The Houston Texans have officially signed cornerback Ronald Darby to a one-year contract worth $2.5 million, as reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN. This move follows the Jaguars‘ recent release of the veteran defensive back, who had joined the team last March on a two-year deal.
During the 2024 season, Darby started 12 games for Jacksonville, recording 46 tackles, three tackles for loss, and nine pass breakups. Despite his contributions, Darby’s performance was scrutinized, as he allowed a passer rating of 120 and four touchdowns while covering receivers, leading to the Jaguars’ decision to part ways.
At 31 years old, Darby brings a wealth of experience to Houston’s secondary. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft and has since played 10 seasons. Throughout his career, he has suited up for the Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, Denver Broncos, and Baltimore Ravens. His career statistics include 447 tackles, eight interceptions, and 106 pass breakups, along with 6,222 defensive snaps played.
This move addresses a need in the Texans’ defensive backfield as they look to bolster their roster. While Houston already fields one of the league’s strongest cornerback duos in Derek Stingley Jr. and Kaiir Elam, Darby’s experience provides depth and support. Stingley, signed to an extension that makes him the league’s highest-paid defensive back, has faced injury challenges in two of his first three seasons. Darby could see meaningful playing time should Stingley’s injury issues persist.
“I’m excited to join the Texans and contribute to a team with such a bright future,” said Darby after signing. “I look forward to fighting for a position and helping build something special here.”
Darby’s signing comes as the NFL navigates a busy free agency period, which officially began on March 12. Multiple teams are racing against the clock to finalize deals and make roster adjustments ahead of the upcoming season.
With Darby’s signing, the Texans aim to enhance their defensive strategy, particularly in situations requiring experienced cover skills and veteran leadership. His presence will not only solidify the cornerback depth but potentially provide a stabilizing effect on Houston’s defensive scheme.
