Texas Longhorns Part Ways with Former Top WR Recruit Johntay Cook II in Mutual Decision
Texas Longhorns wide receiver Johntay Cook II, a highly touted recruit from the 2023 class, has left the program following a mutual decision with the team, according to Coach Steve Sarkisian. Cook, who was one of the top receivers nationally when he signed with Texas out of DeSoto, had been struggling to find consistent playing time this season.
Cook had eight receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns in six games this season, but he had not logged a catch since the game against Mississippi State on September 28. His playing time was significantly reduced due to a packed receiving corps that includes transfers Isaiah Bond, Matthew Golden, and Silas Bolden, as well as the emergence of DeAndre Moore and freshman Ryan Wingo.
Sarkisian described the decision as “mutual between the two of us” and expressed respect for Cook and his family, wishing him the best in his future endeavors. Cook had been battling a toe injury this season, which may have contributed to his limited playing time and eventual decision to part ways with the team.
The departure highlights the depth and competition within the Texas Longhorns’ receiving corps. Despite Cook’s promising start, he was unable to break through and secure a significant role, leading to his decision to leave the program. The Longhorns, currently ranked No. 5 in the College Football Playoff standings, will host Florida on Saturday.
