The St. Thomas More girls tennis team emerged victorious at the Class ‘A’ state championship, accumulating a total of 488 points. The event, held in Rapid City, South Dakota, saw strong competition from Sioux Falls Christian, who finished second with 443.5 points. Rapid City Christian secured fourth place, marking a commendable performance at the championship.

The Pierre Governor tennis team also showcased significant potential in the ongoing tournament. Heading into the second day of the 2024 tennis state tournament, the team stood in sixth place with hopes of finishing strong. Currently, every flight has an opportunity to achieve a ranking of fifth place or higher.

Among the standout performers, Eliza Mayer and Adrian Hand, competing in flights five and six respectively, successfully advanced to the semifinals on Tuesday after winning their quarterfinal matches. In the doubles category, Bailey Jessen and Ella Fisk achieved a surprising victory over the six-seeded Lennox team to advance to the finals for fifth place. Similarly, Brianna Tedrow and Amara Dell progressed by winning their semifinal match with a narrow 10-9 scoreline. Elise Bowers and Mayer, playing in flight three, managed to reach the finals for fifth place after winning two out of three matches.

On the singles court, Jessen, Tedrow, Bowers, and Dell started the day at the fifth-place semifinals, needing victories to keep their fifth-place hopes alive. Each of these flights maintained a 1-1 match record.

The Governors accumulated 191 points on the first day, positioning them in sixth place. With a mere 47 points separating them from third place, there remains a strong possibility for advancement, given that all nine flights still have the potential to earn more points as the tournament progresses into its second day.
