Portland Timbers Vs La Galaxy Match Preview

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Timbers will host the LA Galaxy at Providence Park on Sunday, March 16, at 4:45 p.m. ET as both teams seek their first points of the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.

The Timbers enter the match after a discouraging 2-0 defeat to Nashville SC last weekend, leaving them with just one victory in three matches. They currently sit 12th in the Western Conference, with a goal differential of minus four.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy comes off an impressive 4-1 win over Herediano in the CONCACAF Champions Cup but have had a dismal start in MLS, suffering three consecutive losses and standing last in the conference with the worst goal differential.

Portland‘s only win this season was a narrow 1-0 triumph over Austin FC. The team struggled against Nashville, taking only nine shots compared to Nashville’s 24, and converting just four of those attempts on target.

“We need to capitalize on our opportunities and be more aggressive in front of goal,” said Timbers forward Felipe Mora, reflecting on the need for improvement as they head back home.

The LA Galaxy, despite their recent Champions Cup success, struggled significantly against St. Louis last week, losing 3-0 despite leading in total shots and possession. “Having more possession does not mean we controlled the match,” stated Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney. “We’ve got to find a way to convert our chances.”

Historically, matches between the Timbers and Galaxy have been tightly contested. The Timbers aim to leverage their solid home record from last season, when they notched nine wins, five draws, and just three losses.

”Providence Park is always a fortress for us,” added Mora. “With our fans behind us, we can turn the tide against anyone.”

In terms of roster changes, Portland’s Santiago Moreno made a return from injury last game, coming off the bench, while Jonathan Rodriguez and Juan David Mosquera remain sidelined for the Galaxy. The Galaxy’s goalkeeper situation may change, with James Pantemis being considered to start ahead of Maxime Crepeau.

Fans can watch the match live on FOX or stream it through the FOX Sports App and other platforms. A live broadcast will also be available for viewers in various international locations, but may require the use of a virtual private network (VPN) to access U.S. streaming services.

As both teams look for momentum early in the season, this meeting is pivotal for setting the tone moving forward. Catch all the action live this Sunday.
