Todd Mclellan Los Angeles Kings Return

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Todd McLellan, the former head coach of the Los Angeles Kings, returned to the practice facility on Wednesday ahead of his game with the Detroit Red Wings against his old team. McLellan, who led the Kings to two playoff appearances before being let go in February 2024, expressed a mix of nostalgia and support for his successor, Jim Hiller.

McLellan understands the challenges Hiller faces, particularly after two first-round playoff losses to the Edmonton Oilers. “It’s doable,” McLellan said, referencing the difficulties of defeating the Oilers in a seven-game series. He acknowledged that factors like injuries and luck play a significant role in playoff success.

In his last two seasons with the Kings, McLellan witnessed both triumphs and heartbreaks. He reminisced about the overachieving team from 2021-22, which ended a three-year playoff drought only to lose in the first round. “It was a great experience,” he said, reflecting on his time in Los Angeles.

As he prepares to face the Kings, McLellan acknowledged the ongoing work he and his Red Wings must do as they aim to end a nine-year playoff drought. Since becoming Detroit’s head coach, he has led the team to a promising start this season, with a record of 7-3-0. “I think we all have so much work to do with our own team,” he remarked, emphasizing his focus on the Red Wings.

Returning to Los Angeles brought back fond memories for McLellan, who noted the warmth of familiar faces he encountered, including trainers and security staff. He has maintained connections with Rob Blake, the former Kings general manager who fired him, and relishes the friendships formed during his tenure.

McLellan stated, “I have zero regrets. It was an unreal experience for me as a coach to get to know the players and be part of this community.” He hopes to rekindle positive moments as his Red Wings prepare to face the Kings at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday night.
