Tomas Machac Advances as Clay Season Begins at Monte-Carlo Masters

MONACO, April 9, 2025 — No. 21-ranked Tomas Machac will face No. 10 Alex de Minaur in the Round of 32 at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Wednesday. This matchup follows Machac’s victory over Sebastian Baez, where he secured a comeback win with scores of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In contrast, de Minaur last took to the court on March 25, 2025, during the Round of 16 at the Miami Open, but fell short against Matteo Berrettini, losing 3-6, 6-7. As the clay season kicks off, Machac looks to build momentum while de Minaur seeks redemption.
The Monte-Carlo Masters, running from April 6-13 at the scenic Monte-Carlo Country Club, marks the third ATP Masters 1000 event of the season on clay. This year’s tournament draws significant attention as it features prominent players including Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic, but without the retired ‘King of Clay’, Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic, a two-time champion at this event, is among the few multiple titleholders in the 2025 edition, alongside Stefanos Tsitsipas, who has claimed the trophy three times in four years. Tsitsipas, who recently re-entered the top 10 of the ATP rankings, is expected to perform strongly on the clay he favors.
Valentin Vacherot, the only local player, also received a wildcard. This year’s contenders highlight a blend of established champions and rising talents as players adjust from hard courts to clay.
The event is being broadcast live across various platforms, including Eurosport in Europe and Tennis Channel in the USA. Matches begin daily at 10 a.m. UK time and will draw fans eager to witness top-tier tennis action.
On the horizon, British No. 1 Jack Draper is starting strong in the masters, having breezed past Marcos Giron 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round. Draper, who is seeded sixth, is on track to face either Tomas Etcheverry or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for a place in the quarter-finals.
In the competitive world of men’s tennis, every match counts. As these players vie for supremacy on the clay, the results may have lasting implications on their rankings and momentum as the season progresses.
