Top College Basketball Players Enter Transfer Portal Ahead of 2025 Season

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The NCAA transfer portal opened to college basketball players on March 24, allowing players to seek new opportunities less than 24 hours after the completion of the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. The portal will remain open until April 22.
During this period, numerous players have expressed intentions to transfer, and several notable moves have already made headlines. Notably, Illinois forward Morez Johnson, who averaged 7.0 points and 6.7 rebounds in his freshman season, has committed to the University of Michigan after extensive interest from multiple programs.
“I’m excited to join a program with a rich tradition like Michigan. I believe I can make an impact there,” Johnson stated in an exclusive interview.
Another significant transfer involves former Xavier guard Jalen Swain, who has decided to join the Texas Longhorns. Swain, a sophomore, averaged 11.0 points and 5.5 rebounds with an impressive shooting percentage of 53.2% last season.
Players entering the portal this year also includes Michigan State captain who started 16 out of 37 games as well as a standout guard from Iowa. The list continues to grow as more athletes evaluate their future.
Additionally, players like R.J. Luis, the 2024-25 Player of the Year from St. John's, are not only declaring for the NBA Draft but also entering the portal simultaneously. Luis had a standout season averaging 18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.4 steals while leading his team to a 31-5 record.
Forward Jaden Hopkins is another notable entrant, having battled injuries throughout his collegiate career with a 15.8-point and 8.5-rebound average over limited appearances in his last two seasons.
The excitement around player movements has caught the attention of fans and coaches alike. “This time of year creates unique opportunities for both the athletes and programs,” said NCAA analyst Tom Chambers. “With the transfer portal being more accessible, teams can adjust their rosters more dynamically.”
Kentucky has also secured a prominent prospect, land guard, who previously played for the Mountain West Conference championship team. His ability to score over 20 points per game last season demonstrates his potential to significantly contribute to the Wildcats’ roster.
This offseason is stirring with activity, and as the transfer window remains open, more announcements are expected that will shape the future of college basketball programs across the nation.
