Top-ranked Nebraska Volleyball Hosts Northwestern, Michigan State This Weekend
LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team is set to return home for two matches this weekend. The Huskers will host Northwestern at 6 p.m. on Friday and Michigan State at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Friday’s match will highlight Nebraska’s annual “Pink Match” to promote breast cancer awareness. Fans can catch the action on Nebraska Public Media or stream it on B1G+. Larry Punteney will provide commentary for both matches, with Saturday’s match also available on the Big Ten Network.
Currently, Nebraska boasts an unblemished record of 18-0, replicating the strong start of their 2023 season. The Huskers have swept their last nine opponents, a streak not seen since 2010. The team leads the nation with a .332 hitting percentage and has won 28 consecutive sets.
This season, Nebraska is perfect in sets when reaching 20 points first. Their winning percentage over the past five years stands at .902, a testament to their consistent high-level play under head coach Busboom Kelly.
Outside hitter Harper Murray is having an exceptional junior season, averaging 3.71 kills per set. Last week, she became the 25th player in school history to achieve 1,000 career kills. Senior middle blocker Rebekah Allick also stands out, averaging 2.48 kills on a .412 hitting percentage.
For Northwestern, the Wildcats (13-7, 3-5 Big Ten) are performing better than last year, having already surpassed their win total from the previous season. They are led by outside hitter Rylen Reid and Ayah Elnady.
Michigan State, with a record of 15-3, will play Iowa on Friday night before visiting Nebraska. The Spartans are led by Taylah Holdem, who averages 4.00 kills per set. Nebraska has a strong historical advantage in both matches, leading 21-1 against Northwestern and 29-2-2 against Michigan State.
