Toyah Willcox Strictly Come Dancing 2024

Every year, the popular television dance competition, “Strictly Come Dancing,” invites celebrities from various fields to showcase their dancing skills in hopes of winning the coveted glitterball trophy. This year, the show has drawn significant attention by including punk-rock legend Toyah Willcox, a 66-year-old singer with a career spanning over four decades.

Willcox is renowned for hit singles such as “It’s A Mystery,” “I Want to Be Free,” and “Brave New World.” Her illustrious career includes eight top 40 singles, 25 album recordings, and two published books. After rising to fame in the late 1970s as the frontwoman of the band Toyah, she pursued a successful solo career during the mid-1980s.

In addition to her musical achievements, Willcox has acted in over 40 stage shows and more than 20 films, including “Jubilee” and “Quadrophenia.” Her recent works include roles in British films like “Ahhh!” directed by Steve Oram. She has also participated in several reality TV shows, such as “The Great British Sewing Bee” Christmas special.

This year’s “Strictly” features an array of celebrities including EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick, Olympian Tom Dean, “Miranda” actor Sarah Hadland, and JLS singer JB Gill. Willcox expressed excitement about participating, stating, “This is going to be a wild and wonderful ride, and I’m here for every sparkly second.”

Willcox’s inspiration to join “Strictly” came from broadcaster Angela Rippon. Referring to a conversation with Rippon earlier this year, she said to The Mirror in April, “Well, I’d have to do it sooner rather than later, because I’m not going to be able to move like that in two years’ time.”

However, this year’s anniversary series has not been without controversies. Allegations of “threatening and abusive behavior” have been directed at professional dancers Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima. In response, the BBC has introduced new welfare measures including assigning personal chaperones to contestants.

In one of the recent live shows, Willcox’s husband, Robert Fripp, caused a stir in the audience by loudly booing judge Craig Revel Horwood as he critiqued Willcox’s Samba performance. This light-hearted incident unfolded with Fripp shouting “boo” from the crowd, leading Horwood to humorously tell him to “sit down young man.”

The judges awarded her performance 15 points, placing her and dance partner Neil Jones towards the bottom of the leaderboard. Despite this, Willcox survived the dance-off against Tom Dean and Nadiya Bychkova on the previous weekend.

“Strictly Come Dancing 2024” continues to air on Saturday nights on BBC One and iPlayer, drawing viewers into the dances and dramas that unfold each week.
