Toyota Unveils High-Performance 2.0-Liter Turbo Engine with Over 400 HP

TOKYO, Japan — Toyota has revealed its next-generation 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, capable of producing over 400 horsepower, as part of its new four-cylinder engine lineup. The engine, showcased at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, is designed to balance electrification goals with performance, targeting enthusiasts and high-performance vehicles.

The 2.0-liter turbo engine, internally referred to as the “G20E,” was first tested in 2024 and is expected to deliver at least 400 PS (394 hp) and 369 lb-ft of torque. During a press event, Toyota Chief Technology Officer Hiroki Nakajima hinted that the engine could exceed these figures, potentially rivaling competitors like Mercedes-AMG‘s M139 engine, which produces 416 hp in its standard configuration.

“Is it a 400-PS engine?” Nakajima responded to a reporter’s question, suggesting the final output could be higher. The engine is designed for both transverse and longitudinal mounting, making it versatile for various vehicle platforms, including sports cars and race cars, where it could generate over 600 hp in unrestricted form.

Toyota also plans to offer a lower-output version of the 2.0-liter turbo engine, producing 300 PS (296 hp) and 295 lb-ft of torque, catering to a broader range of vehicles. This engine is expected to replace the BMW-sourced B48 engine currently used in the Toyota Supra, signaling a shift toward in-house powertrain development.

The new engine will sit above Toyota’s existing 1.6-liter three-cylinder unit found in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, positioning it as a key component in the company’s sports car lineup. Speculation continues about the return of iconic models like the Celica and MR2, with the G20E likely playing a central role.

Meanwhile, Toyota’s luxury brand, Lexus, is reportedly developing a high-performance model with a twin-turbo V-8 engine, potentially serving as a street-legal counterpart to Toyota’s GT3 race car. This move aligns with Toyota’s commitment to catering to enthusiasts despite the industry’s shift toward SUVs and stricter emissions regulations.

“Against all odds, Toyota still wants to cater to enthusiasts,” said Nakajima, emphasizing the company’s dedication to performance vehicles. The G20E engine is expected to compete with high-performance offerings from Mercedes-AMG, Audi Sport, and BMW M, with a focus on affordability and accessibility.
