Tragic Roof Collapse at Novi Sad Train Station in Serbia Claims Multiple Lives
A devastating incident occurred at the train station in Novi Sad, Serbia, on Friday, resulting in the deaths of at least eight individuals. The tragedy happened when a concrete roof collapsed at the entrance of the station, which is located in Serbia’s second-largest city. According to Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, the collapse occurred around midday local time (11:00 GMT) while people were seated on benches beneath the canopy.
The rescue efforts, described as “extremely challenging,” involved over 80 rescuers and heavy machinery. Two individuals are currently hospitalized, with one man having undergone leg amputations due to severe injuries. Rescuers are also in communication with two others, including a young girl, who remain trapped under the debris.
The train station in Novi Sad had recently reopened in July after three years of renovation, although construction was still ongoing in some areas. However, Serbian Railways clarified that the collapsed outdoor roof was not part of the recent renovations.
In response to the emergency, the Blood Transfusion Institute in Novi Sad has appealed for blood donations. Serbia’s Prime Minister Milos Vucevic has assured that a thorough investigation into the incident will be conducted and emphasized the need to hold accountable those responsible for ensuring the safety of the structure. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, describing the day as “a dark Friday for us, for all of Serbia, and for Novi Sad”.
The incident has prompted widespread concern and a call for immediate action to ensure such tragedies do not recur. The investigation is expected to provide more details on the causes of the collapse and any potential negligence or structural issues.
