Trailblazing DJ Annie Nightingale Passes Away at 83
Renowned radio DJ Annie Nightingale, who made history as the first female presenter on BBC Radio 1 and went on to become the station’s longest-serving host, has sadly passed away at the age of 83. Nightingale joined BBC Radio 1 in 1970 and remained the only woman on the station’s line-up for 12 years.
Throughout her career, Nightingale was known for her immense passion for music and her ability to champion a wide range of genres, from prog rock and punk to acid house and grime. Her influence extended beyond the radio waves as she also co-hosted the popular BBC Two music show, The Old Grey Whistle Test.
Tributes have been pouring in for Nightingale, with fellow broadcaster Mollie King describing her as a “trailblazer, spirited, adventurous, fearless, hilarious, smart, and so good at her job.” King added that Nightingale “changed the face and sound of British TV and radio broadcasting forever.”
Other notable figures in the industry have also expressed their condolences and shared their admiration for Nightingale’s contributions. One such figure is BBC Radio 6 Music DJ and host of Desert Island Discs, Lauren Laverne, who thanked Nightingale for her trailblazing work and for showing others the way in the industry.
Annie Nightingale’s passing was announced on BBC Radio 1, where presenter Mollie King highlighted Nightingale’s dedication to championing female talent in broadcasting.
