Travis Hunter: The Rising Star of College Football and Heisman Frontrunner
Travis Hunter, the standout athlete from the University of Colorado, is making waves in the college football world and has solidified his position as the 2024 Heisman Trophy frontrunner. Hunter’s journey to superstardom began when he was regarded as the No. 1 player in the 2022 recruiting class. He set multiple records in Gwinnett County and Georgia, including 48 career receiving touchdowns, and also excelled as a cornerback with over 7 interceptions in his final two high school seasons.
Despite initial commitments to Florida State, Hunter chose to join Deion Sanders at Jackson State, where he quickly made an impact. As a true freshman, he was a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award and earned SWAC Freshman of the Year honors. His performance included 20 tackles, 10 pass breakups, two interceptions, and one fumble recovery on defense, along with 18 catches for 188 yards and four touchdowns on offense.
In 2023, Hunter followed Deion Sanders to the University of Colorado, where he continued to break records. He averaged 114.7 snaps per game and set a single-game record with 149 snaps against Stanford. Offensively, he had 57 receptions for 721 yards and five touchdowns, despite missing several games due to injury. Defensively, he led the team with three interceptions and five pass breakups, becoming the first player in at least 25 seasons to achieve 50+ catches and 3+ interceptions in the same year.
Hunter’s accolades include the Paul Hornung Award as the nation’s most versatile player, consensus first-team All-American, and consensus first-team Academic All-American. In the 2024 season, he has continued to excel, leading Colorado in catches, yards, and touchdowns while also contributing significantly on defense. His performance has earned him praise from analysts and coaches alike, with Fox Sports CFB analyst Joel Klatt describing him as a “unicorn” and Deion Sanders comparing him favorably to his own professional career.
Currently, Hunter is the Heisman favorite with -110 odds according to DraftKings Sportsbook, cementing his status as one of the most exceptional players in college football history[2]).
