Trump Responds to Team Europe’s Taunt After Ryder Cup Victory

FARMINGDALE, New York — In a tense match full of fan hostility, Team Europe claimed victory in the 2025 Ryder Cup on Sunday, defeating the United States 15-13. The win marks Europe’s first Ryder Cup triumph on American soil since 2012.
After the win, European players, led by Rory McIlroy, celebrated by chanting, “Are you watching, Donald Trump?” The moment was captured on social media as the team hoisted the Ryder Cup trophy. In response, President Trump tweeted, “Yes, I’m watching. Congratulations!”
Throughout the tournament, Team Europe faced significant verbal abuse from fans at Bethpage Black. McIlroy acknowledged the challenges presented by the crowd, saying, “The abuse got to me a few times,” and emphasized that golf should be held to a higher standard.
During one particularly heated moment, McIlroy stepped away from his ball as fans shouted insults. Security was increased, with at least 20 police officers dispatched to manage the disruptive crowd. McIlroy recounted an incident where a beer was thrown at his wife, Erica, prompting his teammates to intervene.
McIlroy pointed out that such behavior should not be part of golf, stating, “Golf has the ability to unite people. It teaches etiquette and respect. This week, we didn’t see that.”
While Europe celebrated their victory, Trump, who had attended the event earlier in the weekend, remained upbeat about his team’s efforts despite the loss. Team USA attempted a late comeback, but ultimately fell short, unable to overcome a seven-point deficit built during the first two days of competition.
As the Ryder Cup prepares for its 2027 return to Ireland, McIlroy promised fans that the behavior seen in 2025 would not be tolerated in the future. “We will make sure to say to our fans in Ireland that what happened here is not acceptable,” he said.
