SACRAMENTO, Calif. — P.J. Tucker, a veteran forward with a reputation for being both tough and vocal, has signed a 10-day contract with the New York Knicks, marking his return to the NBA after a tumultuous season with the Los Angeles Clippers. The 39-year-old veteran aims to bring stability and support to a young Knicks roster.

“I’m just a realist,” Tucker said regarding his reputation. “I’ve been there. I know how it goes. It’s a long, long season. You need guys behind you to tell you those are good shots, to keep working, and to maintain positivity during tough times.” This ethos emphasizes Tucker’s role as a mentor in a locker room where no player is over 30.

After expressing a desire for a trade from the Clippers, Tucker identified the Knicks as his preferred destination during the buyout market, capitalizing on his long-standing relationship with Knicks president Leon Rose, his former agent. “I always felt like the Knicks were my first option throughout the whole process, so I was happy to wait it out,” Tucker explained.

Tucker’s experience is particularly valuable after playing at least 81 games in five different seasons. He trained diligently in Houston and Philadelphia during his time away from the game. “It felt like I just got drafted again,” he said. “It’s different. Trust me, it’s different.”

Known for his precise corner-three shooting and intense defensive play, questions arise about Tucker’s stamina following an extended absence from competitive play. Nonetheless, he expressed readiness to earn his place again in the lineup, reflecting on the urgency of the current situation. Head Coach Tom Thibodeau has indicated that Tucker will serve as a veteran presence and emergency option, reminiscent of Taj Gibson‘s role last season.

“Just veteran leadership. Basically, the type of role Taj had when he came in,” Thibodeau noted. “And then if there’s a need, he’s got the experience to handle it.”

Tucker’s presence and leadership style have already resonated with younger teammates. “We want him to be who he is,” teammate Josh Hart said. “He has to keep doing what got him here, and part of that is the leadership aspect.”

Marshall Bridges, one of the many younger players on the Knicks, expressed his appreciation for Tucker’s guidance during team shootarounds. “It’s actually easy [being a leader on a 10-day contract],” Tucker pointed out. “I was talking to the guys about the situation that’s going to happen [against the Kings] and how we can get better.”

Through his experience and vocal leadership, Tucker aims to contribute positively both on and off the court as the Knicks pursue success in the remainder of the season and the playoffs.
