Tyler Shough Saints Quarterback

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Rookie quarterback Tyler Shough will make his first career start for the New Orleans Saints on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. Drafted as the 40th overall pick in 2025, Shough takes the field after replacing Spencer Rattler, who struggled in recent games.

Saints head coach Kellen Moore made the switch after Rattler’s performance in the team’s Week 8 loss to Tampa Bay, where New Orleans fell 23-3. Rattler finished the game with 136 passing yards, while Shough had 128 yards with similar stats. Moore’s decision reflects the urgency of improving the Saints’ disappointing season.

New Orleans currently sits at 1-7, and a strong showing from Shough could be critical for his future with the team, especially considering the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. If the Saints hold a top pick, they might consider options to bolster their quarterback position.

Shough’s schedule includes matchups against several struggling teams, including the Miami Dolphins (2-6) and the New York Jets (1-7). Winning these games could help him secure his role as the team’s starting quarterback heading into next season. However, if he underperforms, the Saints might look to the draft for a new franchise quarterback.

The stakes are high as the Saints aim to rebound from a disastrous season. With the draft looming, Shough needs to prove his worth against a challenging remaining schedule. His performance in the coming weeks may ultimately determine the franchise’s direction.

“He just needs to show he can move the offense, improve the numbers, and run Kellen Moore’s system efficiently,” said football analyst Ran Carthon.

If Shough impresses, he could help the Saints avoid the prospect of drafting another quarterback and focus on strengthening other positions. The 2026 NFL Draft is shaping up to be crucial for the Saints, and Shough’s success could pivotally influence the team’s plans.
