UConn’s Sarah Strong Emerges as Key Player in NCAA Basketball
UNCASVILLE, Connecticut — Sarah Strong, a sophomore forward for the University of Connecticut, is establishing herself as a key player early in the 2025 NCAA basketball season. After an impressive national championship win last year, Strong’s talents have only continued to grow.
UConn coach Geno Auriemma praised Strong’s skills and leadership on the court. “We put the ball in Sarah Strong’s hands, and we’re going to get something really, really good,” Auriemma said following a recent victory over Ohio State, where Strong scored 29 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Last season, the 6-foot-2 Strong averaged 16.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, and was pivotal in UConn’s national championship triumph against South Carolina. This season, she has raised her game, averaging 20.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, and contributing significantly in assists and steals.
Her potential was recognized by Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley, who remarked at the Final Four last year that Strong might become the best player to come out of UConn. “Those are strong words. But what she’s able to do — stay calm, the IQ is off the charts,” Staley noted.
UConn heads into the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase this weekend, where they will face No. 6 nationally ranked opponents. Strong’s performance is critical as the Huskies seek to maintain their top-ranked status. Auriemma continues to set high expectations for Strong, encouraging her to play like the best player in the country.
Strong has shown resilience and confidence reminiscent of past UConn stars. She has consistently performed under pressure, scoring in double figures in all but three games last season. In matches against tough competition, her court awareness and skill set have been on full display.
As UConn strives for greatness once again, Strong’s efforts will play a significant role in the team’s goals. The Huskies look to build on their success as they navigate challenging early-season matchups, with Strong at the forefront.
