CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina coach Bill Belichick has named senior quarterback Drake Johnson as the starter for Saturday’s game against Clemson. This decision comes after starter Gio Lopez was ruled out due to a lower-body injury sustained weeks ago.

Lopez, who started the season as the Tar Heels’ quarterback, suffered his injury during a 34-9 loss to UCF. Johnson stepped in for Lopez against UCF and has thrown for 170 yards with two touchdowns in limited action this season. He previously also played during a tough season-opening loss to TCU.

Lopez has had a challenging season, completing 42 of 67 passes for 430 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He has faced criticism, ranking low nationally in quarterback efficiency and passing yards. After the injury against UCF, Lopez was seen on crutches and faced uncertainty regarding his return.

Both UNC and Clemson are entering the game with disappointing records of 2-2 and 1-3, respectively. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney acknowledged the significance of coaching against Belichick and the excitement it brings despite their struggles this season. “It’s amazing,” Swinney said. “I never thought I would have the opportunity to coach against coach Belichick.”

The match-up holds historical significance as it is rare for a coach with multiple national championships to face one with multiple Super Bowl titles. Swinney’s Tigers have underperformed, facing challenges early this season, including back-to-back losses against Georgia Tech and Syracuse.

Belichick, who has been learning from Swinney during their offseason interactions, emphasized the need for improvement within his team. “We just haven’t been consistent enough in any area,” he said. The Tar Heels’ upcoming game will be part of the Chapel Thrill Gameday Series, with a noon EDT kickoff.

The rivalry continues as both teams strive for a crucial win after their recent setbacks.
