UNC Tar Heels Achieve First No-Hitter in 21st Century

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina Tar Heels baseball team made history on April 1 by securing its first legitimate no-hitter of the 21st century during a game against Gardner-Webb, winning 11-1 in seven innings.
The no-hitter came just a week after pitcher Aidan Haugh’s unusual no-hit bid against Boston College, which was ultimately nullified due to a rare rule misinterpretation. Haugh pitched a 96-pitch game and was on the verge of solidifying his place in history until a confusing play led to the final out being counted as a hit, dashing the team’s hopes prematurely.
The incident occurred when Boston College’s Jack Toomey reached first base via a walk and Nick Wang hit a line drive that struck Toomey, resulting in an automatic out. At the time, the Tar Heels’ players celebrated what they believed was a historic no-hitter, but the official score revealed the miscalculation and the no-hitter was not recognized.
Haugh’s teammates rushed the field, unaware of the ruling, and their joy turned to disappointment once the initial excitement subsided. Coach Scott Forbes expressed the collective feeling of the team, stating, ‘We thought we had made history, and it was tough to see it slip away.’
However, the Tar Heels were determined to capture a legitimate no-hitter. Just a week later, Folger Boaz, Olin Johnson, and Camron Seagraves took the mound against Gardner-Webb, successfully showcasing a flawless performance that secured the program’s milestone.
The game was not without its challenges; Gardner-Webb managed to score a run in the second inning despite the no-hitter. The score came after Dale Francis Jr. reached base due to an error, followed by a wild pitch and another ground ball error that allowed them to take a 1-0 lead.
This occurrence mirrors a similar situation in Major League Baseball in 2011, where pitcher Ervin Santana allowed a run following an error before eventually recording a no-hitter. After overcoming that setback, the Tar Heels went on to dominate the game, ending with an 11-1 score.
With this achievement, the UNC baseball team has relieved the pressure of not having recorded a no-hitter in over two decades, and they can now focus on continuing their successful season. ‘We needed to get this off our backs,’ said Forbes. ‘This team is resilient, and they showed it today.’
