Union Saint Gilloise Versus Newcastle United

BRUSSELS, Belgium — Union Saint-Gilloise will compete in their first Champions League home match as they host Premier League team Newcastle United on October 1.

Team captain Christian Burgess, 33, recently made headlines as the oldest English outfield player to debut in the Champions League since Steve Bould in 1998. Burgess, a football history graduate, understands Belgian resilience well, having studied the nation’s pivotal role during World War One.

“When I was a kid, I just remember watching the Champions League. I can’t believe I could possibly be leading a club to play against the teams I used to admire,” Burgess said.

Having trained with Arsenal before joining Championship side Middlesbrough, Burgess emphasized the importance of education in his career. Under the guidance of Tony Mowbray, he was encouraged to finish his degree first.

“It was something you couldn’t turn down,” Burgess said about his first professional contract.

Alongside defensive partner Ross Sykes, who joined from Accrington Stanley in 2022, Burgess played an integral role in Union winning their first league title in 90 years last season. Sykes, previously released by Burnley for being too small, found success in the Belgian top flight after nearly giving up on football at 11.

The pair have contributed to Union Saint-Gilloise’s remarkable journey in Europe this season, with a notable 3-1 win against PSV Eindhoven. Sykes expressed confidence in their ability to face any team despite being underdogs.

“We’re not afraid to come up against anyone,” Sykes said.

With big dreams ahead, Burgess and Sykes aim for a top-24 finish in the league phase, which would lead to a chance at a European giant in the knockout stage.

Both players, supported by a passionate team and loyal fanbase, know every match is significant as they look to prove their worth at European football’s highest level.

“Never give up. You will always get rewarded for what you put in,” Sykes said, looking toward their upcoming matches.
