The big news from the water polo scene is that Team USA just snagged a bronze medal at the Paris tournament! Led by goalie Adrian Weinberg, they managed to pull off an exciting 11-8 shootout win against Hungary.

Weinberg was a superstar during the match, especially in the fourth quarter when Hungary took the lead for the first time with two goals. But Team USA didn’t back down. With some clutch goals from Alex Bowen and Hannes Daube, they tied it up just in time for the shootout.

Feeling nervous in those high-pressure moments, Weinberg recalled some advice from U.S. track gold medalist Noah Lyles. He shared that he reminded himself he was made for those moments, which kept him focused as he made some critical saves.

The shootout turned out to be a nail-biter. Hungary’s first shot hit the post, and Weinberg saved the second one, while Bowen and his teammates sealed the deal with successful penalty shots.

This victory marks the first men’s water polo medal for the U.S. in 16 years, following a silver in 2008. Bowen expressed just how significant this win was for the team, highlighting their determination and grit to overcome previous challenges.

Hungary came in as a strong contender, being the defending bronze medalists, but they left with a fourth-place finish this time around.

The game was quite the rollercoaster, with Team USA leading by just one point after each quarter. Johnny Hooper, who faced some trouble in the semifinal, opened the scoring, giving his team an early boost.

USA’s comeback had some key moments, including a backhand goal from Ben Hallock that tied the score. In a game filled with ups and downs, Weinberg’s stellar saves helped the team regain momentum and keep the rhythm going.

In other tournament news, Greece finished fifth, buoyed by three goals each from their key players. Spain ended up in sixth place despite a strong pool play, while Italy and Australia took seventh and eighth respectively.
