Van Gerwen Anticipates Challenge from Rising Darts Stars Littler and Humphries
In the competitive world of professional darts, the year 2024 has seen two prominent figures, Luke Humphries and Luke Littler, dominate the scene. The spotlight initially turned their way when they faced each other in the World Championship final, with Humphries defeating the teenage sensation, then only 16 years old. Since then, both players have consistently demonstrated their prowess on the oche.
Despite facing each other in several high-stakes matches, it is the narrative surrounding Luke Littler that has captured most media headlines. As described by darts veteran Michael van Gerwen, this media attention has somewhat overshadowed the achievements of World No. 1, Luke Humphries. Speaking to Express Sport, the Dutch player remarked, “I think the one person who gets penalised the most [from intense media scrutiny], it’s Luke [Humphries].” Van Gerwen highlighted that even though Humphries has been particularly successful, the media’s fascination remains with Littler’s remarkable rise.
Van Gerwen, himself a formidable presence in darts, has faced and fallen to Humphries, notably at the World Matchplay final earlier this year. “Humphries triumphed… with room to spare,” Van Gerwen acknowledged publicly. He also expects the teenage Littler to continue competing at a high level, though suggesting that his young age might lead to inconsistent performances. “He’s going to have his downs,” commented Van Gerwen, underscoring the ebbs and flows of a dart player’s career.
The Dutch player, known in darts circles as the “Green Machine,” remains a prominent figure. Holding numerous titles, including the recent Hungarian Darts Trophy, van Gerwen looks to reclaim his position as a leading force in darts. Reflecting on his past influence, he mentioned his role in Phil Taylor’s decision to retire. Van Gerwen faces the future with determination, stating, “I’m not going to stop in five years,” affirming his intent to remain a major contender.
As Humphries and Littler continue to impress, the discussions around a potential new era in darts have become a topic of considerable interest. However, van Gerwen remains confident that his experience and skill will keep him competitive, suggesting Littler and Humphries will have to perform exceptionally well to surpass his achievements. “They’ll need to do really well to keep me off my position,” he declared.
