Veteran Bengali Actress Anjana Bhowmick Passes Away At 79 Remembering Her Iconic Film Journey

Veteran Bengali actress Anjana Bhowmick, known for her illustrious film career, has passed away at the age of 79 in Kolkata. The iconic actor, who was the mother-in-law of renowned actor Jisshu Sengupta, breathed her last on Saturday morning following a battle with respiratory issues.

Anjana’s daughter Nilanjana, along with her husband Jisshu, were by her side at the hospital during her final moments. The news of her demise has brought together members of the Bengali film fraternity, including directors Srijit Mukherji and Arindam Sil, to pay their respects.

Starting her journey in cinema at the age of 20 with the 1964 film ‘Anustup Chanda’, Anjana Bhowmick quickly rose to fame in the industry. Renowned for her on-screen chemistry with late actor Soumitra Chatterjee, she delivered memorable performances in films like ‘Thana Theke Aschi’, ‘Chowringhee’, ‘Nayika Sambad’, and ‘Kabhi Megh‘.

One of her acclaimed roles was alongside Soumitra Chatterjee in the film ‘Maheshweta’ (1967), showcasing her versatility as an actor. Despite retiring from the film industry years ago, Anjana’s contribution to Bengali cinema remains etched in the hearts of movie buffs.

Originally named Arati, Anjana Bhowmick shared screen space with iconic actors and left an indelible mark on the audience with her performances. Her legacy lives on through her daughters, Nilanjana, who was also part of the TV show ‘Hip Hip Hurray’, and Chandana.
