Veteran Players Lead Kansas City Chiefs to Victory Over New Orleans Saints
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In a throwback performance reminiscent of their past triumphs, veteran players JuJu Smith-Schuster and Kareem Hunt led the Kansas City Chiefs to a victorious outing against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. The dynamic performance at Arrowhead Stadium was a nod to the players’ significant contributions in previous seasons, as the Chiefs secured a hard-fought win.
“It’s pretty cool getting the guys back,” said Smith-Schuster after the game. “I’d say it’s like the band is back together,” he added, reflecting on the reunion with his former teammates. The wide receiver stepped up to fill the void left by the injured wide receiver Justyn Ross, making seven catches for 130 yards.
Kareem Hunt, who rushed for 102 yards and scored a touchdown in his first game back with the Chiefs since his release in 2018, described his return as a “great feeling.” “I missed it very much,” said Hunt, explaining his emotional display after scoring a 5-yard touchdown that marked his return to the scoring sheet.
Both Smith-Schuster and Hunt have faced challenges and changes since their initial tenures with the Chiefs. Smith-Schuster, who spent the previous season with the New England Patriots, returned to Kansas City in the wake of injuries within the Chiefs’ receiving corps. Hunt, after his dismissal from the Chiefs, played with the Cleveland Browns until last season, hoping for another opportunity with his original team.
Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs’ quarterback, credited both players for their understanding of the game plan and their ability to adapt. “Kareem just runs extremely hard,” Mahomes commented. “He gets every yard out there, and JuJu fits well in this offense,” he added when pointing out Smith-Schuster’s knack for finding open spots on the field.
Chiefs’ Head Coach Andy Reid has been instrumental in re-integrating both players into the team dynamic. Reid’s strategic approach allowed the team to leverage Smith-Schuster’s and Hunt’s distinct skills, turning them into critical assets despite the absence of other key players like Tershawn Wharton and Clyde Edwards-Helaire due to injuries.
With the victory, the Chiefs remain one of two undefeated teams in the NFL as they head into their Week 6 bye. This win underscores the resilience and depth within the team, showcasing how both veterans and young players can blend seamlessly to overcome adversity.
