Victor Wembanyama’s Summer Journey Fuels NBA Comeback
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs‘ star center, is back on the court after a transformative summer. Following a season cut short by a blood clot, Wembanyama is ready to make a strong comeback as the NBA preseason begins.
The 21-year-old spent much of the summer training intensely, reflecting on his health and pushing his physical limits. During a recent media day, he told reporters, “My training this summer, it was brutal. I chose to do something much more violent… I wanted to get my body back.” His work ethic has drawn attention from teammates and coaches alike.
Spurs forward Julian Champagnie marveled at Wembanyama’s dedication, saying, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone work out like that. It’s crazy to see.” Wembanyama participated in grueling drills, including one-on-one defensive sequences with every teammate, showcasing both his skill and conditioning.
This offseason also took Wembanyama well beyond the basketball court. He embarked on a journey that included a retreat at a Shaolin monastery in China for meditation and kung fu training, saying it helped him understand his own perspective on life. “The traumatic experience is very much linked to all the stuff I’ve done in the summer,” he explained. “It makes you understand lessons that nothing else could have made me understand.”
Wembanyama not only focused on physical training but explored new experiences. He visited NASA’s Johnson Space Center, engrossed in the intricacies of space travel. “Seeing the machines and the aircraft, everything that’s a replica of what’s actually in space or going to space, was incredible,” he said.
As training camp begins, Wembanyama’s hard work is evident. He joined veteran teammates for skill training sessions that emphasized real-game scenarios, allowing him to adapt his skills in a competitive setting. “Vic is big on learning,” Champagnie noted, emphasizing Wembanyama’s openness to improve.
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson, who took over from Gregg Popovich, said Wembanyama’s intensity is inspiring teammates. “At his age, it’s eye-opening to see somebody come in and demand excellence,” Johnson noted. “It’s easy for him to demand that.”
Wembanyama’s confidence has returned as he prepares for the upcoming season. “I’m so much more under control and my conditioning has gotten so much better,” he said, indicating that his summer training will shape his performance this year.
With the regular season approaching, Wembanyama stands ready to lead the Spurs and make a strong impact. “I can assure you, nobody has trained like I did this summer,” he declared. “I feel better, I look stronger!”
