Viral Sensation: Thailand’s Baby Hippo Becomes Internet Superstar
A baby pygmy hippopotamus named Moo Deng, residing at a zoo in eastern Thailand, has captured the hearts of internet users worldwide with her adorable appearance and playful antics. The young hippo’s chubby cheeks and endearing expressions have made her a viral sensation, drawing comparisons to a “bouncing pig,” a translation of her Thai name.
Moo Deng was born on June 10 to parents Jona and Tony, who have welcomed seven calves in total at the Chonburi province zoo, which is located approximately two hours from Bangkok. This tiny hippo has stepped into the spotlight, charming millions of followers on social media with her delightful yet clumsy adventures, such as attempting to nibble her handler despite not having teeth.
The baby’s popularity extends beyond the internet, substantially increasing attendance at the zoo. Typically, about 800 visitors flock to the facility during the rainy season, considered a low tourism period. However, Moo Deng’s fame has drawn daily crowds of 3,000 to 4,000 during weekdays and nearly 20,000 over weekends, primarily lured by the prospect of meeting the celebrated calf.
Zoo authorities, led by Director Narungwit, have responded to Moo Deng’s popularity by implementing measures to protect her well-being. In light of videos showing visitors throwing water and objects at the calf, increased security and surveillance were instituted to prevent such behavior. Additionally, viewing time with Moo Deng is now restricted to maintain her health and comfort.
Moo Deng’s endearing presence has also led to several partnerships and promotions, including collaborations with renowned brands like Sephora Thailand and the NBA's Utah Jazz, who have capitalized on her allure in their marketing campaigns.
Pygmy hippopotamuses, native to the forests and swamps of West Africa, are known for their solitary and sometimes nocturnal habits. Despite their small size, they are endangered, with estimates suggesting less than 3,000 remain in the wild. The typical life expectancy of these creatures is between 27 and 50 years.
Moo Deng’s journey to stardom has brought renewed attention to the plight of her species, raising awareness and admiration for this unique and precious animal.
