Virat Kohli Delhi Ranji Trophy Practice Session

NEW DELHI, India — Indian cricket star Virat Kohli returned to domestic red-ball cricket after a 12-year hiatus, practicing with the Delhi Ranji Trophy team ahead of their match against Railways starting January 30. Kohli’s grounded nature was on full display as he refused assistance to carry his kit, winning admiration from fans and teammates alike.

On the second day of practice at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Kohli declined an offer from Delhi team manager Mahesh Bhati to help carry his kit bag. “Virat, let us help you,” Bhati said, to which Kohli replied, “Bhaia, what are you saying? It’s my playing gear, I’ll carry it myself.” Kohli then carried the bag on his shoulders into the dressing room, showcasing his humility.

Bhati, who coached Kohli during his Under-19 days, shared anecdotes about their bond and recalled old memories. “We were recalling old memories and bursting into laughter,” Bhati said. “He asked if boys still play on matting, and we joked about how cricket has changed.” Kohli reminisced about playing on matting pitches, which were common during his early career, and how it shaped his skills in playing cut and pull shots.

Kohli’s return to the Delhi team has sparked immense excitement among fans. Crowds gathered outside the stadium as early as 4 a.m. to catch a glimpse of the cricketing icon. The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) made entry free for fans, requiring only an Aadhar Card for admission. Chants of “RCB” and “Kohli, Kohli” echoed outside the venue, highlighting his enduring popularity.

Fan Shantanu Mishra told ANI, “This kind of turnout is only possible for Virat Kohli. Otherwise, there is no reason for such a large gathering at a Ranji Trophy match.” Another fan, Akash Kumar, who traveled from Sindhora Kalan, said, “I have been here since 5:30 a.m. to see him play. This is the first time I have seen such a crowd for a match.”

Delhi captain Ayush Badoni won the toss and opted to field first in the match against Railways. Kohli’s presence has not only boosted morale but also drawn unprecedented attention to the Ranji Trophy, underscoring his influence on Indian cricket.
