Emily Maher Boston Marathon 2025

NORWOOD, Mass. — Emily Maher of WCVB NewsCenter 5 is set to run in the 129th Boston Marathon on April 21, 2025, raising funds for the Matt Brown Foundation. This year marks a significant milestone for the foundation, as it is participating as an official Boston Athletic Association charity for the first time.

The foundation, started by Norwood native Matt Brown, aims to support individuals and families facing the challenges of paralysis. This spring, the organization is focusing on giving back to the local community by funding adaptive playground equipment.

“It is just a swing, but it’s not just a swing for us,” said Keri Frederick, a teacher at Little Mustangs Preschool Academy in Norwood. Frederick highlights the impact of an adaptive swing for a mobility-impaired four-year-old student in her class who uses a wheelchair. Despite having access to special toys and play areas, the student has been unable to fully participate in playground activities with peers.

“It’s hard because he can’t climb up the stairs. He can’t go down the slide independently. He can’t run around with his friends,” Frederick added. In response, the school community is collaborating to make the playground accessible for all children.

Principal Kristen Noonan noted that the idea to approach Brown for assistance emerged during a Parent-Teacher Organization meeting. “They had the idea of going to Matt,” she said. “It was a no-brainer.”

Brown emphasized the importance of the adaptive swing for inclusion. “This adaptive swing is going to allow him to really get on the swing sets with his classmates and really be able to be included,” he explained.

Having been paralyzed in a high school hockey accident 15 years ago, Brown dedicated his life to helping others facing similar obstacles. “Hearing how excited he was, hearing how excited his classmates were, really just let us know that it was another one that really hit home to us,” he stated.

Founded five years ago, the Matt Brown Foundation has made substantial contributions to various projects. Last year, it awarded $130,000 in grants and is on track to allocate $85,000 in 2025 alone.

As Brown prepares for his 11th Boston Marathon alongside running partner Lucas Carr, his mission to support the Norwood community continues. “They keep the good days present and the bad days few and far between. And now we get to give back to this community,” Brown remarked.
