WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A winter storm is set to impact Kansas from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon, bringing significant snowfall and dangerous travel conditions. With total accumulations expected to range between 6 to 10 inches along the I-70 corridor, meteorologists are preparing for severe weather impacts throughout the state.
According to Meteorologist Adrian Campa, the storm system will begin with a cold front moving through Kansas, bringing light snow showers and flurries overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning. However, the real concern arises as the main storm approaches, with forecasters warning of moderate to heavy snow by late Tuesday.
“This storm is likely to produce major travel impacts across the state, particularly on Wednesday,” Campa stated. “Drivers should be prepared for hazardous conditions and should avoid travel when possible.”
As the storm intensifies overnight, areas near Hays, Salina, and the Kansas City metro area could see the highest snowfall totals of up to 10 inches. Meanwhile, locations south of I-70, such as Wichita and Dodge City, are projected to receive 3 to 6 inches. Areas near the Oklahoma border may see lighter accumulations ranging from 1 to 3 inches.
The National Weather Service has classified this as a significant weather event, with Wind Chill Advisories expected for Thursday morning. Wind chills may fall as low as -20 degrees, prompting officials to remind residents to take precautions against the bitter cold.
“Kansans need to be prepared for extreme cold, especially after this storm passes,” Campa noted. “Morning lows may drop to single digits, and it’s crucial that everyone checks on their neighbors during this time.”
Additionally, another weather system is being monitored for late Friday into Saturday, which could bring further snow to the state. Current forecasts indicate this system will likely have less impact compared to the upcoming storm.
As residents brace for winter’s return, officials urge them to stay tuned for updates and monitor local weather forecasts for the latest information regarding snowfall and road conditions.
