TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A severe winter storm affecting northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan has prompted law enforcement to issue multiple snow emergencies. As of Feb. 12, 2025, the current situation includes hazardous road conditions due to freezing rain, ice, and snow.
The snow emergency is categorized into three levels. Level 1 is the lowest level and is declared when roadways become hazardous due to blowing and drifting snow. While driving is still allowed, caution is strongly advised.
Level 2, which indicates more severe conditions, recommends that individuals only drive if absolutely necessary. During a Level 2 emergency, residents are encouraged to check in with their employers regarding work attendance.
Level 3 is the most critical emergency stage, where roads are closed to all non-emergency personnel. Authorities urge the public to avoid travel during this level, as driving for non-essential reasons could lead to law enforcement intervention.
As the winter storm progresses, the Toledo area is experiencing variable weather conditions. Areas to the south and east are more likely to see a mix of rain and snow, while regions to the northwest may receive several inches of snow. An ice storm warning is currently in effect for Lucas, Wood, Ottawa, Hancock, Seneca, and Sandusky counties, with predictions of over 0.25 inches of ice accumulation.
In the Toledo metro area, a wintry mix and potential snowfall of two inches present a significant risk for hazardous travel throughout Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The ice and snow are expected to taper off by 6 a.m. Thursday; however, conditions may still hinder morning traffic.
Looking ahead, another winter storm is expected to bring additional hazardous weather, prompting an ALERT DAY for Saturday into Sunday morning.
The community is encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly on untreated roadways, to help ensure safety for all during this challenging winter weather.
