The opening round of the annual South African Under-20 Women’s Week began on Saturday at Queens High School in Johannesburg. Six matches were held, highlighting the promising talent within the participating provincial teams. The tournament, a significant event in the South African women’s rugby calendar, featured dominant displays from traditional rugby powerhouses such as the Blue Bulls, Western Province, and Border.

The Blue Bulls achieved the most decisive victory of the day with a 52-0 win over Free State. Similarly, Western Province displayed commendable form, securing a 51-0 victory over the Valke. Another notable performance came from Border, who showcased the depth and power of their women’s program with a 43-0 triumph over SWD.

In other matches, the Sharks proved too strong for the Limpopo Blue Bulls, winning 41-0. The host union, the Golden Lions, also had a successful start to the tournament, achieving a 35-0 victory against Boland. Meanwhile, the Eastern Province team emerged victorious with a 17-0 win over the Griquas.

The event paused for a day of rest on Sunday before the second round of matches scheduled for Monday. In this next round, the winning teams from the first round will face each other in what promises to be a set of compelling encounters.

The fixture list for Monday, September 23, is as follows: Blue Bulls will compete against Eastern Province at 09:00. Western Province will meet the Golden Lions at 10:30, followed by Border playing against the Sharks at noon. Griquas are set to take on Free State at 13:30, and Boland will face Valke at 15:00. The day’s matches will conclude with Limpopo Blue Bulls against SWD at 16:30.
