Wrexham FC Gears Up for Rotherham Clash Following International Break
Wrexham Football Club‘s manager, Phil Parkinson, has expressed confidence that his players are “recharged” as they prepare to face Rotherham United following the recent international break. The team, known as the Dragons, sits in second place in League One, trailing Birmingham City by two points. Their match against Lincoln City was postponed due to international duties affecting the opposition’s squad.
“Obviously we didn’t want the break,” Parkinson remarked regarding the team’s recent momentum. “We were in good form, the games were called off so you quickly switch to how we can utilise the break.” Parkinson further explained that the team underwent a productive training session after their EFL Trophy match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, followed by a brief respite over an extended weekend. “For the players and the staff, it was good to recharge the batteries mentally and physically, and the players have come back in good shape this week,” he said.
Wrexham’s agenda includes three matches in the span of seven days, starting with Saturday’s fixture at Rotherham United’s New York Stadium. Parkinson expressed eagerness for the upcoming challenges against Rotherham, Huddersfield Town, and Charlton Athletic. “It’s a good week for us, an exciting one in terms of profile,” he noted, applauding Rotherham United’s competitive nature under manager Steve Evans.
Reflecting on a past comment by Evans about Wrexham, Parkinson acknowledged the attention his team draws. Evans had previously described Wrexham as akin to the Harlem Globetrotters, a remark Parkinson took in stride. He commented on the strong expectations surrounding both clubs.
Wrexham entered the international break after a mixed series of results, including a goalless draw with Leyton Orient and a 1-0 defeat to Stevenage, which set them back in points compared to league leaders Birmingham City. Key performances from players like James McClean helped the team secure a victory against Northampton Town, demonstrating resilience before the break.
Looking to the forthcoming match against Rotherham, Wrexham faces some injury concerns. Players such as Luke Bolton remain sidelined, though there is positive news regarding the recovery of other team members. “The squad is looking strong, and we need everybody for the week ahead,” Parkinson commented on the team’s health status.
Potential adjustments to the starting lineup are anticipated, with new signings poised to make their debut League One appearances. Wrexham remains unbeaten at home this season, though their away performance shows room for improvement. Despite these challenges, they are expected to secure a favorable result against mid-table Rotherham United.
