LA JOLLA, Calif. — Xander Schauffele, the world No. 2 golfer, announced that he aims to return to the PGA Tour at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, scheduled for March 6-9, after being sidelined for over a month due to a rib injury.
Schauffele, who last played during the Sentry Tournament of Champions in early January, has faced challenges since sustaining an acute intercostal strain during the offseason. Initially hoping to compete through the pain, he ultimately realized the need for rehabilitation after finishing 30th at Sentry.
“Taking the Genesis off gives me three weeks leading into Bay Hill,” Schauffele told Golfweek. “I want to get as many reps under the belt before the Masters. It would be nice to get the competitive blood flowing a few times before going into a really big event and also have the Players coming up.”
Despite his successful year in 2024, where he claimed two major championships at the PGA Championship and the British Open, Schauffele expressed frustration at missing significant tournaments, including the Genesis Invitational and the American Express.
“I need a little more TLC, especially at 31 versus 25 and make sure everything is oiled correctly,” Schauffele said. “I thought I’d be fine and kept going, but I knew it was getting significantly worse and needed time off.”
Doctors have advised Schauffele against rushing his recovery. He emphasized the importance of avoiding re-injury, noting that fellow players warned him about the pitfalls of returning too soon.
“With really thick rough, I could potentially reinjure myself,” he explained. “Once I’m back, I just want to go. I’ve been instructed to be patient and make sure I’m 100 percent.”
As he prepares for the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Schauffele has been gradually increasing his practice sessions but has yet to reach a comfortable level for a four-day tournament. “I haven’t quite got there yet comfortably without feeling rushed,” he stated.
The PGA Tour will complete its West Coast Swing next week at the Mexico Open before heading to the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Schauffele remains committed to a cautious approach while he recuperates.
“I’m losing my mind sitting at home watching everybody compete,” he said. “But I’m taking the long view; I’m looking years down the road versus being in the mix right now.”
