Young Winger Ben Doak Embraces Scotland National Team Call-Up

Ben Doak, currently on loan from Liverpool, has been thrust into the spotlight following his recent involvement with the Scotland national team. The 18-year-old winger reflected on his rapid ascent in an interview at a Scotland press conference held at Hampden Park, preceding the upcoming Nations League match against Croatia. “A few years ago, I didn’t expect to be here at 18,” Doak expressed. “Even getting picked for the 26-man squad in the Euros, especially after missing the second half of the season due to injury, was unexpected.”

Despite the accolades, Doak is focused on his future path rather than dwelling on the attention he’s received. “I try not to look at the hype,” he mentioned. “It’s great when people are supportive, but the same people might be critical when performances dip. I’ve learned to ignore both the positives and negatives.”

Before making his debut against Poland in a 3-2 defeat, Doak was due to participate in Euro 2024, only for an injury to thwart his aspirations. “It was gutting,” he admitted about missing the tournament. “It was a big blow, but it drove me to work harder to make a difference.”

Doak credited Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson for aiding his integration into the Scotland national squad. Sharing insights about his experiences, he said, “I think people forget that I’m the youngest, but all the lads are good, and I feel comfortable, despite the age gap.”

John Carver, assistant manager to Scotland head coach Steve Clarke, also commented on Doak’s progress. “The likes of Ben will improve by playing against better players,” Carver stated, highlighting the potential benefits of Doak’s loan move to Middlesbrough. Carver underscored the importance of young talents like Doak gaining first-team experience, suggesting it would be vital for their development and benefit the national squad.
