Artist Laura Jones Wins 2024 Archibald Prize for Portrait of Author Tim Winton

Sydney-based artist Laura Jones has been awarded the esteemed 2024 Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales for her striking portrait of acclaimed Australian author Tim Winton. Jones’s win makes her only the 12th woman to claim the prestigious honor over the prize’s long history.

The winning portrait of Tim Winton was unanimously selected by judges from a total of 1,005 entries spanning 57 finalists. In her acceptance speech, Laura Jones expressed her deep connection to Winton’s work, particularly his novel ‘Cloudstreet,’ which she described as enchanting generations of Australians.

At the ceremony, the AGNSW director, Michael Brand, praised Jones’s artwork for its ability to beautifully depict the bond between artist and subject, noting the painting’s sensitivity and the powerful connection it conveys.

In her remarks, Jones shared her admiration for Winton’s environmental advocacy, highlighting his efforts to protect the Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. She emphasized the importance of uniting for the environment, echoing Winton’s own message.

Meanwhile, the Archibald Prize announcement also recognized the talent of other artists, with Pitjantjatjara artist Naomi Kantjuriny from Tjala Arts winning the Sulman Prize and Djakaŋu Yunupiŋu clinching the Wynne Prize.
