LOS ANGELES, CA — Elliot Page has shared how fellow actor Olivia Thirlby helped him embrace his sexuality during their time together on the set of the 2007 film Juno.

In his 2023 memoir, Pageboy, Page, 38, discussed his journey toward self-acceptance and how Thirlby played an instrumental role. The Canadian-born star revealed that their bond in the film allowed him to shake off inhibitions related to love and intimacy.

“Working with Olivia left a lasting impression on my mind,” Page wrote. He described how their connection blossomed on set, leading to a romance that he described as both intense and transformative.

Thirlby, who portrayed Leah in Juno, is credited by Page for helping him navigate his sexual awakening. His memoir details shared moments in her hotel room and their trailers, claiming she was the “first woman” who made an impact on him.

At the time, both were around 19 or 20 years old. Page recalled, “What were we thinking?” as they explored their feelings in surprising locations, including a restaurant’s private room.

Page expressed admiration for Thirlby, noting, “We were the same age, but she seemed so much older, capable and centered.” He emphasized that being intimate with her helped dissipate his shame and inspired him to be bolder in life.

Reflecting on his time with Thirlby, he noted, “Being intimate with Olivia helped my shame dissipate. I didn’t see a glint of it in her eyes, and I wanted that.” Their relationship had a profound impact on his self-acceptance.

After filming Juno, Page returned home heartbroken over their lost love. Thirlby came out as bisexual in 2011 and later married Jacques Pienaar, with whom she separated in 2021. Even after their relationship, Thirlby held a significant place in Page’s heart.

While promoting Pageboy, Page spoke about his subsequent romance with actress Kate Mara, noting that their connection was different. He said he was still in touch with Mara, who read his memoir, indicating a strong bond that continues despite the changes in their lives.

The saga of Page and Thirlby demonstrates the powerful influence of personal connections during formative years. Today, Page’s journey continues through his public discussions of sexuality and self-acceptance, with the goal of inspiring others in similar situations.
