New ‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff Release Delayed to Early 2026

NEW YORK, NY — Fans of the “Game of Thrones” franchise will have to wait until early 2026 for the premiere of the highly anticipated spinoff series, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) announced the delay during its upfront presentation at Madison Square Garden on May 14, 2025.
The initial plan was for the show to debut in late 2025, but the first trailer revealed that viewers can now expect the series to arrive in winter 2026. HBO’s content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys confirmed this timeframe during the presentation.
“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is based on George R.R. Martin‘s novella, “The Hedge Knight,” and follows the adventures of the knight Ser Duncan the Tall, played by Peter Claffey, and his young squire, Egg, portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell. The story takes place about 100 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and 100 years after “House of the Dragon.”
In the series, Dunk and Egg embark on a quest that leads them to a tournament where they encounter members of the Targaryen family, including Prince Aerion, Prince Baelor, and Prince Maekar. They also meet other notable characters, such as the Laughing Storm, Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and a puppeteer named Tanselle.
The show will consist of six episodes in its first season. Martin has joined forces with Ira Parker, who also worked on “House of the Dragon,” to write and executive produce the series. Additionally, Sarah Adina Smith is set to direct three episodes, while Owen Harris will direct the remaining three.
No premiere date has been confirmed yet for the third season of “House of the Dragon,” which is currently in production and is expected to be the penultimate season of the series.
Despite the delay, fans remain eager for more content from the world of Westeros, with plans for additional adaptations of Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas in future seasons.
