Brett Favre Scandal: Sterger Reflects on Public Reaction in New Documentary

LOS ANGELES, CA — Sports media personality Jenn Sterger has opened up about her experiences during the Brett Favre scandal that unfolded in 2010. In a new documentary titled “UNTOLD: The Fall of Favre,” which began streaming on May 20, Sterger discusses the impact of the media’s coverage of the scandal on her life.
Sterger, now 41, became the focus of media scrutiny after a Deadspin report revealed that Favre had sent her explicit text messages and an unsolicited photograph. During one emotional moment in the documentary, Sterger recalls feeling dehumanized by the public reaction.
“I was never treated like a person,” she said. “I think one of the reasons why it’s so hard for people to have any empathy for me on the internet is because I’m just a picture to them, and he was Brett Favre.”
The documentary chronicles Favre’s career from his rise as a Green Bay Packers star to his controversies, which include accusations of sexual harassment and misappropriation of welfare funds in Mississippi. Despite the serious allegations, Favre declined to be interviewed for the film.
In her conversation with Netflix producers, Sterger revealed that she never publicly discussed the unwanted advances from Favre until a chance mention led to the scandal gaining widespread media attention. “I had said to a couple people, at the end of this, if there are two scumbags out of this situation, it’s myself and Brett Favre,” A.J. Daulerio, the former Deadspin editor, disclosed during the documentary.
Sterger, who worked for the New York Jets during Favre’s one season in 2008, explained that the quarterback had only seen her from afar before a game. Favre reportedly requested her number from a team staffer, who provided it without Sterger’s consent, leading to a series of lewd messages.
Throughout the film, former colleagues and sports commentators express outrage over Favre’s behavior. Jemele Hill, a sports media personality, highlighted the double standards that exist when superstar athletes are accused of inappropriate actions. “We know that when it comes to a superstar athlete being accused of inappropriate behavior with a woman, it’s the woman who’s gonna get the brunt of it,” she said.
“UNTOLD: The Fall of Favre” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
